Decent dog ID tags

Sorry - for clarification, I meant unsupervised.

FTR, I tethered my first dog unsupervised. That was in the mid-70's.
It isn't a choice I would make again.

I don't have any particular need to tether my current dogs, but if a
situation arose where I thought it was something I needed, I wouldn't
hesitate to tether them with supervision.

Sleddog kennels are usually in rural areas where there's
just not that much risk of wandering pet dogs, and where
wildlife will tend to stay away. On the other hand there's
the recent spate of dog killings by wolves near Fairbanks,
where one pack of wolves learned to regard dog yards as
smorgasbords and a few dogs were killed. People with fenced
dog yards didn't have problems; people with unfenced dog
yards found themselves sitting up night after night with
guns, waiting for the wolves to show. The little good that
came out of this was that inspired some people to fence
their yards.

Putting together a safe tether isn't that expensive but it
takes some know-how that probably hasn't trickled out to the
pet dog owner community yet.

Unfortunately, proposed tethering laws don't differentiate. Lawmakers
tend to have tunnelvision.

Proposed? We actually have a tethering law in place where I live.
No, it doesn't differentiate, but as Melinda pointed out when it was
discussed, there aren't a whole lot of mushing kennels in Bloomington.

FWIW I break the law by tethering Harriet on a martingale. I think
I may also be breaking it by not attaching the other end of her
cable to a sanctioned anchor. I would certainly do things
differently if I weren't right there to watch her.

Agreed. I don't foresee ever tying one of my dogs unsupervised, but
supervised? No big deal, as far as I'm concerned.

If we have laws, I might be breaking them. But, the only time Khan is on
his tether is when he wants out. Like right now. I have wondered if
someone can report us for having the dog out with no food, water or shelter
(we have a crazy neighbor a few doors down), but I figured it won't be hard
to convince anyone that the dog does in fact live inside, and sits outside
by his own choice.

My recollection is that our local ordinance handles that by the
amount of time the dog spends tethered. If it's over X amount of
time (I want to say two hours, but I'm totally making that up), then
they should have water, shelter, etc. Round-the-clock tethering is
not allowed.

It would be a shame if those dogs who like to have alone time
outside weren't able to, just because someone arbitrarily decided
that it's Teh Mean to tether them. That would *seriously* impact
Harriet's quality of life, and Khan's too, I'm sure.

found a dog on one of our walks, and reunited him with his owner soon

thinking that it makes better sense to do that than to give an address.

I've seen folks advise omitting the address in favor of cramming as
many phone numbers as possible onto the tag. Also, REWARD.

I'm contemplating new tags, as well, but in my case it's largely a
moot point, as I don't have any alternate phone numbers. (Yes, I
*am* the last person on earth without a cell phone.)

Interesting.

My neighbor just told me that he had let his dog out this morning an
realized that there was a huge raccoon in the yard. He said it climbed
the fence and went into the yard in back of me (and in back of him -
we're on a curve). He said just as it decided to go into that yard
instead of mine, he saw my DH enter the yard with Marcie and Rudy.

I think Ill recommend that he bring the floodlight flashlight out first!

I thought I was!!! I hate to talk on the phone, even though I gave
