Well that's messed up. In Muncie, it was (and may still be) illegal
to pick up someone else's dog. I can understand the reasoning
behind that, but necessity dictates that the law be ignored most of
the time, and AC was generally happy to do so. I had to call them
out several times, sometimes after hours, to pick up dogs that I'd
corralled.

You're telling me. The security folks in my community suggested that I
let the dogs loose so that maybe they could find their way home on their
own. They were running wildly down a busy road! 3 cars (that I saw)
nearly hit them! And when I finally found the owner and drove to her
house, and saw how far away it was from where I had found them, I was
really extra glad I had picked them up. One or both would have been
killed, I suspect. And they had escaped out the gate without the owner
knowing about it.

I think that's pretty messed up too. Seems to me it makes sense if (a)
the first person who sees the loose dog picks him/her up if possible and
(b) the rescuer shouldn't be penalized by then having responsibility for
the dog.

That's awful! Maybe their reasoning is similar to Muncie's? Not
that it makes it any better, obviously.

The way the law read, it was clear that it was mean to address
people maliciously taking people's dogs and turning them over to AC.
That's why I can understand the purpose of the law. I assume it
came out of a real life incident. It's also why AC was generally
happy to look the other way. So, yes, it's messed up, but I can
also understand how it came to be the way it was and/or is.

You'd have to move specifically to Calgary - as far as I know,
this particular service is individual to our animal services
(plus lots of other cool animal laws).

Noted.

This may be the year I move to Canada, depending on who is elected
president. Although I have somehow survived the Bush years...

Given that nearly all the GOP candidates are promising to
continue the Bush years as is, the Bush years aren't
necessarily going to end with this election, depending on
the outcome. Besides, I tend to think that it's important
to stick around and be the Loyal Opposition. 'Course at
some point you just want to get on with your life, I
suppose.

But there are plenty of great reasons to move to Canada that
don't have a lot to do with fleeing the US. For example,
dedicated mushing trails in Algonquin Park.

It's unclear to me why they think that would work, Bush's approval rating
being what it is. OTOH, I don't really know what loyal Republicans think,
I've come to realize. The country has become so polarized, and I'm pretty
sure I'm part of the problem.

Besides, I tend to think that it's important

Well, I have found the Bush years to be, among other things, just plain
embarrassing. I want to apologize to the entire world. I may not be able
to take more of that.

I swore, and meant it, that if Oliver North became our (Virginia's)
senator, I would leave the country.

You're right, and I hope I wasn't offensive to Matt in my post.
Everything I ever hear about Canada makes me think it must be a great
place to live.

For example,

You could start it there.

I fully intend to make an attempt to introduce it to Saint Peter, Minnesota.

Good! The locals are getting kind of smug about it and
need some competition (the Scottish national team
notwithstanding).

Not like my new bathtub! I cannot think of leaving it!

You know, every day I go in there to see the progress, and I get a little
teary. They put part of the tile down yesterday and it looked gorgeous.
But somehow what's really getting me emotional is that the tub has a tile
surround. I keep exclaiming "I never thought I'd have a tile surround!"
It always seemed too luxurious for the likes of me.

So you say. But do they have my sweet, newly painted, chalet?

I hate (HATE!!!) the phone. I don't want to hear it ring, I don't
want to answer it, and I don't want to talk on it. There are a
couple of exceptions (BFF and my family), but other than that, I just
try my damnedest to pretend that it does not exist.

> I don't get

I had that problem when I lived out in the boonies. I've got VoIP
now. The sound quality is much improved, but I occasionally have
dropped calls or weird bleed-through (CBs? other phone lines?). It
doesn't happen often, and when it does, it's more amusing than
irritating. The main thing is that if the power goes out, I have
only a 2hr back-up battery for the modem box. Also, there can be 911
issues in some locations, but apparently it works fine here (at
least, I was able to get through to the dispatcher and the cops
showed up within just a couple of minutes--that qualifies as "works"
for me).

We have cell phone numbers on, as we often aren't home (out of state) with
her, and if she were lost, we wouldn't be sitting by the phone at home, we'd
be out looking, and have our cell phone with us. Someone suggested email
address on it - saying people are more inclined to send an email than call.
I don't know about that - and we don't have an email on it, but it's food
for thought.
