I'd put it pretty low on the priority list. It's great if
you've got the real estate but otherwise kind of marginal
(and I'm someone who does most of her communication through
email).

On the telephone numbers thing, it might be worthwhile to
get a Grand Central account and list that number on the tag.
That way you only have to provide one telephone number but
it will reach you wherever you want, including ringing all
of your phones simultaneously. http://www.grandcentral.com/

I put my home phone and cell phone on tags. If I'm out of town w/out
dogs, someone is staying here with them, meaning home phone. If I have
dogs with me, cell phone. On an ordinary day, they are indoors, but I
can also tell Vonage to Simul-ring. That has been really handy a lot
of times!

If I can only have 5 lines, I'm thinking it should be dog's name, home
phone, Rajesh's Crackberry number (he never leaves home without it, but it
runs down, charge-wise, quickly), and my cell # (whether I have it on me is
50-50, but it is always charged) and REWARD! I'll leave all the other tags
on - a little redundancy never hurt anything.

Really? I get about 4-5 days on a charge. I don't use it
as a phone all that much (1 bar signal at my house) but I
use the data stuff (email, web) a lot. Which model does he
have?

I think a lot of redundancy is a good idea when trying to
ensure you get your dog back. I've got tags, microchips,
and then collars with phone # sewn in, and I expect I could
be doing better.

That's 'cause you don't have it permanently attached to an ear. Also, he is
in the habit of charging his gizmos just because, which he knows he
shouldn't do, but does anyway. When we both had the same cell phones, my
phone would easily go a week between charge, and his would start that way,
and then steadily go downhill. He also just managed to kill the 'battery'
attachment of his laptop.

> Which model does he have?

No idea. I can barely work that thing. I don't know how anyone uses it to
send emails and such. I have small hands and have trouble with the keys.

I am torn between doing something practical and doing something cutesy. I
would like to get Pan one of those fabulous silk martingales that someone
(diddy?) posted links to a while back. And get Khan something thoroughly
undignified - in pink or something. Rajesh seems to be taking one of those
overly melodramatic 'over my dead body' type of stands, so maybe practical
is the way to go.

Our dogs' tags have our home phone number on them. When Matty was
lost, he was in a lakefront town where cell phones are notoriously
unreliable. People searching for him couldn't communicate with each
other or call our home number to say he'd been sighted. On the other
hand, we did have many calls to our home number telling us he'd been
seen and where, including the call that helped bring him home. And
the first night he was missing, we were of course searching for him
rather than sitting by the phone at home, but we did have a person
manning the phone at home.

What one puts on ID tags and how one searches for a lost dog can
depend on the dog, too. With a sighthound, once you've unsuccessfully
searched the area around where the dog was lost, there's not much
point in searching more until s/he has been sighted, given the amount
of ground they can travel in a short period of time.

I never wanted one because of those teeny keys. OTOH, I *love* my
iPhone.

Collar tags (not dangling), microchips (which I have the vet check every
year) and tattoos inside the hind leg. And the microchip has my info and
that of the breeder and the vet.

I've considered the thought of changing them to my cell number. However, so
many places around here don't have service that I think I'm better off
staying with the landline number.

I still am always watching for something more I can do. A GPS chip wouldn't
be too much in my mind.

Oh man, this whole thread has made me rethink Atty's tags. Time to make a
new one. You think you've covered all of your bases until you read other's
experiences!

Here's another base you can't have covered: Get a herding dog.
Maybe recalls when I *think* her name.

Seriously, all of my dogs are chipped and licenced, but I
haven't gone to the length of a personal tag. I've been
rethinking that since a Sibe showed up in my front yard with
similar ID to what my dogs have. Because of privacy laws,
animal services wouldn't give me contact information. I can
understand that, but they also couldn't (not wouldn't) pass my
number onto the owner.

No dog should be running freely or left unsupervised IMHO.

Why do you care where Judy lives? There are lots of places in the US
where there is *no* animal control and no tethering laws.
