I'm just not really a hard-winter person and never will be. Winters get
very cold here in MO (we're 5b, which is the same zone as a lot of the
NE), though of course not as bad as up north (though a friend who moved
here recently from Idaho thinks our winters are *brutal* because the
moisture and wind make everything so much worse). And as an original KY
girl, where temps were rarely cold long enough to freeze the cattle pond
enough for us to be safe on, I simply do NOT like cold. I can deal fine
down into the 30s, but beyond that I just don't like it, especially the
wind. I deal, and I'm better than I used to be. But I'm not at all
interested in skiing, skating or ice fishing, hate snowmobiles, hate
having to put on 16 things to go to the mailbox. I like nekkid dogs too,
who can't stay out for long periods. Not really interested in mushing
mostly because I'm not a huge fan of Northen breeds. I love to watch it.
But do it? No.
I think snow is beautiful, especially if you can sit inside by the fire.
But I hate feeling trapped indoors, and chipping the car out
repeatedly gets boring as hell.
So no, not a winter person. >> Stay informed about: Doggie Play Day (fun action photos) |

Accidentally or deliberately? (I've personally witnessed drivers of cars
deliberately hitting animals, including my childhood cat, so it
unfortunately wouldn't surprise me to hear a snowmobiler did the same.)

Sounds like the same mentality as 90% the off-road bikers (motorbikes) and
ATV'ers I've encountered. :-P >> Stay informed about: Doggie Play Day (fun action photos) |

I just snowshoed for my first time a few
weeks ago.
It was a surprising amount of fun!
But it was Colorado snow, which I understand
is not only bizarrely fluffy, but happens
under MUCH milder conditions.
A friend just left his property in NY up near
the Canadian border. crazy "below zero"
temps. Even his dogs looked at him like he
was crazy for going out.
I'd have to wrap Annie insaran, newspapers
and 3 layers of clothing. And then we'd both
just be too embarrassed to walk anywhere. >> Stay informed about: Doggie Play Day (fun action photos) |

That's HORRIBLE! Both diddy's story and yours.

That would make it harder to decapitate the snowmobiler, silly! Seriously,
though, she's lucky she *didn't* kill someone. As annoying as snowmobiles
may be, people shouldn't be murdered for using them.

Well the town DID put cables across public areas. Marked them. Put
restricted signs, and someone DID darwin themself. The family sued the
town, and it got tossed out because the guy was clearly where he should not
have been. There was no excuse for him being there.
I kind of felt the same way about my corner lot in town. There was never
any excuse for a snow mobiler to be there in the first place. >> Stay informed about: Doggie Play Day (fun action photos) |

Well, part of getting acclimated is figuring out that you
don't need to put on 16 things to go to the mailbox. People
tend to have a survival response to feeling cold, even when
they're at absolutely no risk, and they/we eventually figure
it out with experience. It's okay if you don't like cold
weather, at any rate. I figure if Janet had moved someplace
cold 10 years ago she'd have a different relationship with
cold weather than she does now. That's all.

It's pretty great, and excellent exercise. Emmett loves to
snowshoe with me and because we're generally on untracked
trails they're soft and punchy, and when he gets tired he
stands on my shoes.

Well, the rule of thumb about that kind of thing is that if
you care what you look like it's not that cold. There was a
long cold snap (like, -50F for a week, and -40F for longer
than that) in the Fairbanks area earlier this winter and my
favorite comment about that was from a guy who said that
when he left the house he had to look down to make sure that
he'd remembered to put on pants.

But I HATE, HATE, HATE feeling cold. I hate that no matter what I do and
what configuration I try, my feet *always* start freezing withing 15-20
minutes (and yes, I've read your posts about proper sock/footwear and
yes, I've done all those things, it just doesn't work). I hate having
snot run out my nose because of cold. I hate when my ears start aching,
even inside my ear muffs, so badly that I have a throbbing headache. I
hate my face being too numb to talk.
Regardless of whether I'm actually in danger of frostbite or death, I
find it exceedingly unpleasant to be that cold, ever. >> Stay informed about: Doggie Play Day (fun action photos) |

The nose running is one of my least favorite. I can wear appropriate
layers, and since I've been know to go to the mailbox barefoot and
coatless in 20 something temps, I guess I don't need 16 layers! The
faucet in the nose thing is really very unpleasant though. My sinuses
and lungs don't handle cold well, although I have stuff to help with
some of that. Have yet to figure out the "nose mitten" that works.

Although I do think you're missing something special if you
haven't been outside in cold enough temperatures and working
hard enough to experience ... the snotsickle!

Oh no.
Its totally true.
Thankfully, in NYC we rarely get temps low
enough to form snotcicles (thanks Melinda!),
but when I was up in Can over Christmas about
10 years ago....man! My nose hairs
crystallizes within seconds. And I never
sniffled once :-)

actually....um....*better* than a runny nose.
